Michael D. Anderson, MD of Red Wing, passed away on May 30, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. Michael grew up in Red Wing, attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1970, and upon completing a medical degree at the University of Minnesota, opened the Mississippi Valley Family Clinic in downtown Red Wing. For many years Michael was the medical director of Hiawatha Home Care, where he was fondly called Dr. A and for 22 years he served with the Army National Guard, retiring as Lt. Colonel. He was a regular at the YMCA holding a membership there for more than 40 years. His workday routine included lunchtime visits to many of the local businesses that make up the downtown community. Michael was a regular contributor of health and medical commentary in the form of a column in the weekly Red Wing Shopper as well as a short radio broadcast carried on KWNG radio (an “influencer” ahead of his time). After closing his practice, Michael worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs and in emergency medical services in northern Minnesota. Always a career student, in retirement Michael completed a degree/certificate at the Harvard Divinity School.
Michael shared six sons—Aidan, Brandon, Colin, Evan, Sean and Tristan with his first wife, Rebecca Anne Shear. Michael remarried in 2003 to JoAnn Abbott and the two spent many years traveling, paddling and supporting their families as their children married and grandchildren grew.
Michael is survived by his wife, JoAnn Abbott; his sons, Aidan (Barbara), Brandon, Colin (Shannon), Evan (Emily), Sean (Amara) and Tristan Anderson; step-children, Annette (Dan) Kiefer and Daniel (Brit) Forsythe; grandchildren, Abby, Nathan, Sarah, Kailyn, Caden, Emmy, Jude, Finn, Emmett, Rhys, Layne, Letty, Alayna, Avery and Ainsley; great-grandson, Sutton and siblings, Lynn, Meredith, Terri, Doug and Tracy.
Michael was preceded death by his parents, Neal and Dolores, and his sister, Wendy.
Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Brandon Theisen presiding. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be held at Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. The family requests no flowers, but rather donations made in Michael’s memory, to either the National Eagle Center or the Red Wing Food Shelf.
