Michael James Nemeth, age 81, of Red Wing passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2026.
Mike was born on June 4, 1945, in South Bend IN to Louis and Frances (Butler) Nemeth. When Mike was about 10 years old, his family moved to Orlando, FL. Mike grew up in Orlando but liked to spend time with his grandparents, Louis and Margaret Nemeth, in South Bend. Mike served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 in Germany. Mike built many homes in Orlando with his stepfather and brothers. He was a baker by trade, working at Dunkin' Donuts in Altamonte Springs, FL.
Mike married Norma (Steffenhagen) Holst on May 20, 1978, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orlando, FL. Together they shared 48 wonderful years. They moved to Eagan, MN in February of 1984, where Mike worked at bakeries in the Saint Paul area. In April 1993, Mike bought a bakery in Lake City and named it “Mike and Norma's Bakery”. They enjoyed many fun memories there with great customers and friends. In October 2000 they closed the bakery due to Mike's health concerns. They moved to Red Wing in 2003, and Mike worked at several places but had to retire in 2008 because of health problems.
Mike's favorite pastime was fishing. He would fish every day if possible. Mike also liked wood crafting and traveling in his motorhome around the United States. Mike had the most fun with his dogs, especially obedience training with his two collies, Stoney and Chaz.
He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post 54 in Red Wing, a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in Frontenac and a past member of the Minnesota Bakers Association.
Mike is survived by his wife, Norma; adopted son, Shawn (Maly) Thao; granddaughter, Chloe Thao, all of St Paul; sister, Bonnie (Stephen) Todd of Eustis, FL; brothers, Jamie Nemeth of GA and Tony (Betty) Nemeth of Umatilla, FL; brothers-in-law, Darrell (Carole) Steffenhagen of Red Wing and Myron Hanson of Eagan; sisters-in-law, Linda (Jerry) McNamara of Pine Island, and Deb Steffenhagen of Windsor, CA; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mike is preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Steffenhagen; sisters-in-law, Barbara Hanson and Peggy Steffenhagen; brothers-in-law, Jeff and Charlie Steffenhagen and great niece, Taylor Haglund.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 5-7 PM at the Mahn Funeral Home-Bodelson Chapel, Red Wing. Funeral Service will be on Thursday, July 30, at 11 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Frontenac, with a visitation one hour prior. A live stream of the service can be viewed below. Interment with military honors will follow in Frontenac cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or River Bluff Humane Society.
