Michael Charles Olson, 66, of Red Wing, died Sunday, November 13, 2022 with his family by his side. He was born December 29, 1955 to Charles A.B. and Ruth E (Peterson) Olson in St. Peter, Minnesota. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School and began his career in the trades, starting at the Prairie Island nuclear plant when he was only 17. He co-founded Olson Brother’s Construction with his brother Mark. He was both an accomplished machinist and journeyman electrician. His work set industry standards still used in nuclear plants today. He retired after 37 years at the plant.
He was most at home in his garage, surrounded by his tools and collections. He enjoyed tinkering and made a hobby of fixing antique radios. He was happiest, however, up north at his and his family’s cabins. He loved quality dock time, ATVing, and generally relaxing with his family. He was the go-to-guy for anything that needed fixing. He was generous with his time and meticulous in his efforts. He was also a dedicated member of the Red Men Club, Tribe 31, Red Wing Elks, BPOE #845, and a Son of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, Post 54.
He will be missed by many, including his son, Eric Olson of Red Wing; mother, Ruth E. Olson of Red Wing; siblings, Mark (Sara Larson) Olson, Peter (Lori) Olson, Steve Olson, and Susan (Scott) Northey, all of Red Wing; as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his father; Charles A.B. Olson; and sister-in-law, Mary Olson; and his grandparents; Peter and “Nana” Peterson.
A Celebration of Life will be 11-3 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the Red Men Club in Red Wing. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
