Pastor Eugene L. Hasselquist was born on December 19, 1924, in Almelund, Minnesota to William and Althea (Sedlund) Hasselquist. In 1942, he graduated from North Branch High School and then attended the Minnesota School of Business graduating in 1943. He continued his education at Augsburg College in Minneapolis and Augsburg Seminary. On September 6, 1947, he was united in marriage to Gladys Nielsen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lakeville. They were blessed with three children, Lynne, Peter, and Miriam. In 1951, he was ordained at Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Racine, WI. He served many Lutheran churches during his ministry career including, St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Minneapolis 1951-54, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Great Falls, MT 1954-58, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fargo, 1958-65, Reformation Lutheran Church in Inner City St. Paul 1965-70, and then moved to Red Wing where he served St. Paul’s Lutheran Church from 1970 to 1987. After retiring he continued his ministry as a supply pastor at numerous churches in the surrounding area and near his winter homes in Mission and Donna, Texas. For the last number of years, he preached once a month at Tabor Lutheran Church in rural Bay City and ministered to those confined to their homes and those in nursing facilities. Since 1988, and up to a few years ago, he and Gladys wintered in Donna, TX where he served as Pastor at Love of Christ Lutheran Church. Pastor Gene was active in the Red Wing Noontime Kiwanis Club and The Risers, a men’s morning Bible Study. Pastor Gene loved the outdoors - snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and training Black Labrador Dogs.
Gene is survived by two daughters, Lynne (Dane) Petersen of Red Wing, and Miriam Bergmark (Dave Duepner) of New Richmond, WI; six grandchildren, Eugene Petersen, Andrew Petersen, Miles Hasselquist, Maxwell Hasselquist, Jensine Cole, and Renee Kaeding; and 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Elaine Netzloff of Hibbing, MN; special friend, Elaine Jorgensen of Red Wing; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys; son, Peter; sister, Viola Krumm; brother, Raymond Hasselquist and son-in-law, Jerome Bergmark.
A live-streamed Memorial service will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing. The link is St. Paul's Lutheran Church you tube page. A private burial will be at the Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be at St. Paul’s Church on February 28, 2026 for two hours prior to the 11:00AM service. Memorials are preferred to World Hunger, St. Paul’s Church, or Tabor Lutheran Church.
