Phyllis Berktold

Phyllis Marie (Jonas) Berktold, age 81, passed away Thursday May 22nd peacefully at St. Crispin Nursing Home in Red Wing, Minnesota surrounded by family.

Phyllis was born to Peter and Hazel (Goplen) Jonas on February 8th, 1944 in Red Wing, Minnesota. She grew up there and attended Red Wing High School. Phyllis married Edward Berktold Jr. on April 13, 1962 at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing. They just celebrated their 63rd Anniversary. They raised 2 children, son David of Ellsworth and daughter, Lori Nickelsen of Lake City, Minnesota.

Phyllis loved babysitting and taking care of small children most of her life. Her favorite TV show was QVC. She loved to ride her scooter downtown to Jordan Towers, Koplin's, and Running's as soon as the weather warmed up. She enjoyed visiting with people wherever she went.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Hazel Jonas; her brother, Francis Jonas; her grandson, Kyle Nickelsen; and brother-in-law, Wendell Whipple.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Ed; her son, David; her daughter, Lori; her 3 grandchildren, Tyler Nickelsen, Halie (Michael) Foster, and Mariah (Josh) Nickelsen; and her 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Ann (Jonas) Whipple; her sister-in-law, Kathleen (Diercks) Jonas; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Jerry Bristol; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

A memorial service will be held Friday May 30, 2025 at 11 a.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Hager City, Wisconsin.
