Dick Bedney, age 83, of Byron, died on May 31, 2026 as a result of a motorcycle accident near Owatonna, MN.
Dick was born in Hope, MN on October 3, 1942 to parents, Thomas and Betty (Larson), he was one of 6 children. He was raised and educated in Owatonna. Graduating with the Owatonna High School class of 1960. On July 6, 1963, in Owatonna, he married his high school sweetheart, Rita Jean Underland. This union was blessed with two children. Early in their marriage, they moved to Byron and built a home, had Belgium horses - sharing this love of horses with the community through hayrides, and sleigh rides. Dick went to work for Jostens and for IBM in quality control. He retired from IBM after 28 years, at the age of 52. He then became a dedicated volunteer at Ironwoods Christian Ranch in Stewartville, where he constructed buildings. He loved being a tractor driver for Tweite's Pumpkin Patch in Byron. As long as it was a John Deere Tractor he was on board. Dick was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Byron.
Dick was a loving Dad and Grandpa. He cherished the days with his granddaughter, Madison and he built a great relationship from the start. Dick and Rita would road trip on the Harley making memories in each mile together. In 2012, Rita passed away. Dick was never the same. He still enjoyed adventures on the Harley, he had a near death accident, totaling the bike, and still got another new one.
Dick will be remembered as a kind and happy person, living life on his terms, and leaves a legacy of original poetry. Over the years he has shared some with friends, family and strangers; who were blessed with his words about life, love and happiness.
He is survived by his son, Scott (Betty Jo) Bedney of Rochester; a daughter, Lisa Cummins of Golden, Colorado; a granddaughter, Madison Cummins of Rochester; and siblings, Tom (Chris) Bedney and Betty Lou Bakken, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Rita Bedney; and brothers, Harry, Matt and Pat Bedney.
In keeping with Dick's wishes as a private man, his family will be having private services.
