Richard “Rich” Dean Meier, 88, of Red Wing, died Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Deer Crest Senior Living. He was born July 30, 1937, in Mountain Lake, MN to Gottfried and Gertrude (Heltorp) Meier. He grew up in Windom, MN and graduated from Windom High School in 1955. He attended Mankato State University and served in the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, KY from 1957-1959. After his honorable discharge, he returned to college, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Mankato State University in 1961. He taught math and coached baseball in Fulda, MN from 1961-1964 and then moved to Red Wing where he taught math and coached baseball from 1964-1992. He married Rose Marie Mulligan in 1960, and they later divorced in 1977. He married Karen (Hernlem) Siewert in 1979. Rich was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Wing Elks Lodge BPOE 845, Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54, Redmen’s Club, a life member of both the National Education Association and the MN Coaches’ Association and he belonged to the Ellsworth Country Club. Rich also worked as a blackjack dealer at Treasure Island Resort and Casino from 1992-2007. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, gardening, crossword puzzles, painting and carpentry work and most sports.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Randy and Brad Meier and two brothers, Robert and Don Meier.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Meier and daughter, Jennifer Meier.
Memorial service and celebration of Rich’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with Rev. Amy Larson officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service and burial with military honors will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the church or the Red Wing Athletic Field Capital Campaign (please see information further below on the page). The family would like thank the wonderful staff at Deer Crest for the loving care they gave Rich and thank you to St. Croix Hospice, especially Miranda and Tricia, and to our dear friends, Mike and Tris Danielson for their love and support during this difficult journey.
