Richard B. Sutherland, 91, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at his home. He was born June 1, 1932 in Lake City to Kenneth and Esther (Ubert) Sutherland.
He grew up in the Red Wing area and attended Red Wing schools. He served in the Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1955. In 1949 he married Maxine Kimm and the couple had two sons. They later divorced. In 1960 he married Gertrude Sloper in St. Joseph, Minnesota. They had 4 children and they made their home in Red Wing. Richard worked as a union painter and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed reading and watching old westerns. He and Trudy enjoyed traveling and they made trips to Canada and the western United States. In his later years, he was happiest at home but he loved being a grandfather and enjoyed taking his grandkids out for lunch.
He is survived by his children; Rick (Arlene) Sutherland of Eau Claire, Wisc., Gary (Sandy) Sutherland of Rice Lake, Scott (Bonnie) of St. Croix Falls, Wisc., Troy (Heather) of Red Wing, Maureen (Joe) Trygstad of Mantorville, and Jon (Anita) of Hastings; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bill Ogle; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Trudy; siblings, Blanche Berktold, James “Bud” Sutherland, Betty Ogle and Kenneth “Buzz” Sutherland; and his parents.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m., Friday July 7, 2023 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
