Robert D. Salmonson

Robert Delmar Salmonson, 86, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems, St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 28, 1938 in Red Wing to Russell and Louise (Lovgren) Salmonson. He grew up in Red Wing and graduated from Red Wing Central High School. On June 22, 1960 he married Margaret Wiederholt at the Church of St. Joseph. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska from 1961 to 1963. Following his honorable discharge he enlisted in the National Guard, serving until 1967. For 33 years Bob worked for the City Red Wing, retiring in 1996 as the Director of Utilities. Bob was a member of the Church of St Joseph, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, the Red Wing Elks, the Red Wing Yacht Club where he was a past Boom Captain, and Mississippi National Golf Links. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading, hunting and fishing. He also loved a good brandy Manhattan. Bob was always kind and caring and kept a good sense of humor. He is survived by his children; Amy (Kevin) Smith of Red Wing, Jon (Vonnie) Salmonson of Cannon Falls, and Lori (John) Bowen of Red Wing; grandchildren, Lisa (Jason) Davis, Noah and Maria Salmonson, Matt, Mike, and Megan Bowen; one great-grandchild, Chloe Davis; sister, Linda (Mel) Brown of Otho, Iowa; brother-in-law, Leland Henke of Niobrara, Nebraska and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peg; sisters, Nona Nelson and Wanda Henke; and his parents. Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2024 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Brandon Theisen presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, Post 54.
