Robert Lorance Schlichting, 65, of Hager City, died Saturday February 27, 2016 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1950 in Red Wing to Lorance and Eleanor (Bremseth) Schlichting. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1969. He then served in the US Marines Corps during the Vietnam Conflict from 1969 to 1972. He continued his military service in the Army Reserves retiring in 1991. He attended University Wisconsin - River Falls and University Wisconsin - Stout where he received his master's degree. On August 24, 1974 he married Sherry Madsen and they later divorced. He worked in construction for a number of years and then in Security with Midwest Patrol, GSSC and Loomis Armored. He then taught Construction Trade at the Minnesota Correctional Facility for about 15 years, retiring in 2014. On September 9, 1995 he married Jolene Hauschildt. He was a member of United Lutheran Church, Harding- Hall-Darrington #357 American Legion Post of Bay City, VFW Post in Prescott and Education of Minnesota. He served many years as the clerk for Diamond Bluff Township, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was a certified gun safety instructor. Not only was the military his passion, but he also enjoyed camping, hunting and attending German festivals.
Survivors include his wife Jolene; three children, Nathan (Barb) Schlichting of Goodhue, Jennifer Schlichting (Brandon Panitzke) Little Falls, Minn. and Drew (Tiffany) Schlichting of Red Wing; three step children, Jason (Jodi) Omundson of Roland, Iowa, Cori (Steven Yee) Omundson of Hastings and Travis (Jing) Williams of Farmington; ten grandchildren, Jenna and Cameron Schlichting, Natalie, Samuel and Wyatt Omundson, Delia and Iris Williams, Nick Turner and Jake and Jerica Staehli; one sister, Janet (Tom) Hendrickson of Diamond Bluff; best friend, Jim Swanson of Ellsworth along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one step infant daughter, Rebecca Williams.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Karl Rydholm officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 7 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home.
