Robert Leland Stapel, age 89, of Red Wing, died Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Ellsworth Care Center. He was born June 26, 1928 in Red Wing, to John and Evelyn (Anderson) Stapel. He joined the US Marines and served during WWII until being honorably discharged in 1947. He married Avery Owen on July 11, 1949, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. For many years he worked part time at Larson & Quinn Automotive and full-time at SB Foot Tanning, retiring after 42 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Burnson-Lillyblad VFW #1218 and the Gopher-Fun Trailer Club. Bob was a handyman and enjoyed wood working, building birdhouses and whirly-gigs. He also enjoyed fishing, camping in his travel trailer and collecting oil lamps, coffee grinders, and cup & saucers.
He is survived by his children, Jacqueline (Tom) Trulen of Red Wing, Robert (Lori) of Denver, CO, Robin (Bob) D'Aloise of El Paso, TX, and Patricia (Kevin) Mettler of Mankato; eight grandchildren, Evelyn Trulen, Jacob Stapel, Kris (Max) Ericson, Kaylee (Zack) Eichhorn, Erik D'Aloise, Ashley (Scott Wersal) Mettler, Alyssa Mettler, and Megan Mettler; great grandson Gavin Ericson and a sister, Donna (Fred) Nadeau. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Avery in 1997.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Arthur Sharot officiating. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred to the church. Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel is handling the arrangements.
