Scott Allan Halverson, 74, of Red Wing, Minnesota, died Saturday, April 4, 2026, with his wife by his side.

Scott was born on April 18, 1951, to James and Doris (Alms) Halverson. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1969 and from the University of Minnesota in 1973 with a degree in art history. In 1977, he began a court reporting career with the First Judicial District of Blackhawk and Buchanan counties of Iowa. On November 28, 1992, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Malmgren. Together, they moved to Red Wing in 2002 and resided on the family farm in Hay Creek Township where they enjoyed welcoming friends and family. For another 12 years, Scott reported cases of the Minnesota Judicial Branch, including the City of Saint Paul, until his retirement.

Scott was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Red Wing, where he served as an elder. He was elected multiple times to serve as a supervisor for the Hay Creek Township Board and volunteered many hours tutoring young people with the nonprofit organization Hispanic Outreach of Goodhue County. Scott was an avid reader of both poetry and prose, participating until recently in three book clubs simultaneously. With friends, Scott spent many hours outdoors, golfing, hunting, and fishing. He was a diehard Timberwolves fan and a devoted supporter of the Minnesota Twins. His love for baseball extended to being a founding member of the Pioneer Fantasy Baseball League in 1989, in which he participated for 37 seasons. Music was a passion; he made many playlists to share with family and he performed for several years in the Bells of the Bluffs handbell ensemble. While he did not pursue a career in the visual arts, he surrounded himself with art and actively incorporated it into his life. As a capstone to this lifelong interest, he accomplished his goal of revisiting a favorite site, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, with family in recent weeks.

Scott is survived by Mary Ellen, his loving wife of 33 years; daughters Brianna (Eric Lehto) Halverson and Meagan (Cameron Klotzbach) Halverson; step-daughter, Heather (William A. Jr.) Baumgartner and two grandsons, William A. III and James Baumgartner; and his first wife, Patricia McHenry. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Doris Halverson.

A memorial service will be held in Scott’s honor on Thursday, April 16, 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Red Wing with Reverend Casey vanderBent officiating, followed by the burial ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed on the First Presbyterian Church’s webpage. firstpresbyterianredwing.com Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service and on Wednesday, April 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing.
