Shelby Jean Monk, 86, of Battle Lake, MN, died peacefully Monday, November 20, 2023. She was born on February 18, 1937, in Breckenridge, MN to Spencer and Kathleen (Oliphant) Strom. She graduated in 1955 from Breckenridge High School. On April 21, 1956, she married Donald F. Monk at the Methodist Church in Breckenridge. They lived on the Monk family farm near Campbell, MN and Shelby worked at Norby’s Department Store where she modeled hats. In 1964, they moved to Red Wing, MN and Shelby worked for Northwestern Bank in customer service. They moved to Deephaven, Minnesota in 1972, when her husband Don was promoted to Hennepin County Tax Assessor. Shelby then worked many years at the Wayzata National Bank. Before retiring in 1996, Shelby worked for Choice Hotels where she was in charge of booking crew members for Northwest Airlines. One of her highlights of her career was developing and implementing, the Park and Fly near the MSP airport. She and Don enjoyed “Lake Life” on Otter Tail Lake and their winters were spent in Florida and Arizona. Shelby enjoyed reading at least 3 newspapers a day like her father, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Shelby is survived by two children, Robert D. Monk and Kathryn Monk; granddaughter, Hannah Monk and one sister, M’liss (Gib) Erickson. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Don.
How wonderful it is that she is now reunited with her husband, Don in heaven. A celebration of life will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ottertail, MN. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 31963 Cty Hwy 61, Ottertail MN 56571. Arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, MN
