Shirley Joan Thoms, 87, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Mayo Clinic- St. Marys Campus, surrounded by family. She was born on March 9, 1936, in Red Wing to Charles and Blanche (Brock) Savage. She grew up in Frontenac and graduated from Red Wing High School. In her younger years she worked on the farm and enjoyed baking and cooking. On April 6, 1957, in Iowa, she was united in marriage to David Thoms. For many years she worked for the Red Wing Pottery, Red Wing Shoe Company, and Methodist Camp in Frontenac, Minnesota. She and David spent many years at their vacation home in Lake Havasu, AZ. Embroidery was her favorite pastime and she had a green thumb, planting her gardens and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed golfing and most of all being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her two children, Steve (Lori) Thoms and Bonnie Thoms all of Hager City; six grandchildren, Phil (Angie), Andy, Aaron (Carin), Perry, Michelle (Alex) and Matt (Emily); 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn (Jerry) Nelson along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 65 years, David on January 15, 2022; siblings, Bill, Bobby, Ruth Ann, June, Philip, Marjie, Charles, Mary Jean, Donald, Jeanette and Jack.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Linda McCollough officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
