Steven Edward Flanders, 71, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Elysian Senior Homes in Lake City.  He was born May 6, 1952, in San Diego, California, to Norman and Emily (Aadahl) Flanders.  His family moved to Minnesota after his father passed away and he grew up in Red Wing, graduating from Red Wing Central High School in 1970.  He was drafted into the US Army, serving at Ft. Ord in Monterey, California and Ft. Knox, Kentucky.  During his time in the military, his talent as an artist was noticed and he was commissioned to work for a military magazine.  After he was discharged, he worked a time for TC Woman’s magazine as an illustrator/artist before returning to his hometown.  He met his wife, Kelly McGonagle in 1984 and on Sept. 21, 1991, they were united in marriage. Steven began a 36 year career at NSP as a senior reactor operator and teacher, retiring in 2018.  In addition to his talents as an artist he was also a gifted self-taught pianist.  He was also very active outdoors and had enjoyed rock climbing, mountain biking and even scuba diving, something he and Kelly had learned together.

He is survived by his wife, Kelly of Red Wing; 2 children, Taylor (Alexa) of St. Paul and Hallie (Mike) Cordes of Forrest Lake; one grandchild on the way; 2 sisters, Gwen (Jim Robinson) Flanders of Washington D.C. and Janet (Gregg) Dickie of Minneapolis; sister-in-law Kay (James) Miller; niece, Lia Miller and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Steven’s life and art will be held May 19, 2024 from 12-7pm at Colvill Park Pavillion with food, drink and art.  Burial will took place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.  Memorials are preferred to the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center.  Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
