Susan Kay Windhorst

Susan Kay Windhorst; 79, of Wanamingo passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 25, 2026, at her home. She was born in Red Wing on April 15, 1947, to Garvin and Helen (Swanson) Broin. She graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1965. Throughout her life, she held various jobs, but her favorite job was at Decora Cabinetry, where she loved working with wood and took great pride in the things she created. On August 16, 1969, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Gary Windhorst, at Holden Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Wanamingo and were blessed with two daughters, Jodie and Jamie. She found so much joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life, sharing a cup of coffee and laughter with friends, attending her weekly bible study, spending time in her garden, where she would often be found pulling weeds or caring for her flowers, and volunteering at the Zumbrota Nursing Home. She cherished the friendships and connections that filled her days and brought warmth to her heart. At home, she was never far from her two beloved cats, Miss Lily and Mr. Sammy, who were a constant source of love, comfort, and companionship. She was a longtime member of Wanamingo Lutheran Church, was active in the church choir, and loved helping each year with the Silent Auction.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jodie (Chad) Blakstad of Zumbrota and Jamie (Bradley) Quam of Zumbrota; seven grandchildren, Dana and Danielle Blakstad, Brandi (Kelby) O'Reilly, Tyler (Shelby) Quam, Alyssa (Marshall) Friese, Lyndsey Quam (Alex Sacia), and Natalye Quam (Emmett Meissner): ten great grandchildren, Serenity, Noah, Gabriella, Liam, Kinsley, Kashton, Kolby, Micah, Bryce, and Harvey; one sister, Kathy (Rod) Nardinger; one sister-in-law, Joan (Jon) Swanson, and many first cousins.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Gary Windhorst, her parents Garvin and Helen Broin, and her in-laws Melroy and Verona Windhorst.

Memorial service will be at 11 am on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Wanamingo Lutheran Church with Reverend Dave Sorenson officiating. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the Mahn Family Funeral Chapel in Zumbrota and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at the Wanamingo Lutheran Church Cemetery.
