Thomas E. Gorman

June 2, 1948 — November 27, 2023

Red Wing

Thomas Ernest Gorman, age 75, of Red Wing, died Monday, November 27, 2023, surrounded by his family.  He was born June 2, 1948 in Red Wing to George and Josephine (Heaney) Gorman.  He was one of ten children growing up and often helped out at his family’s grocery store, Heaney and Gorman’s.  In 1966 he graduated from Goodhue High School, and went on to graduate from Winona State and later Hamline School of Law, where he received his law degree.  Tom had his own private law practice until becoming a District Judge for five years. During this time, he was a single parent, raising his two daughters, before he returned to his private practice, from which he retired in 2018.  Tom was well respected within the legal community and during his time as a judge, he was an advocate for MADD.  On March 1, 1991, Tom married Joni Johnson, and together they enjoyed the past 32 years of marriage together, raising their family and delighting in their children’s accomplishments--Tom was very proud of his children.  He was an active individual who enjoyed playing many sports in his younger years and during his children’s sporting years, he was involved with the Red Wing Basketball Association. He was an avid MN Gopher fan and was a Gopher Basketball season ticket holder since 1972.   He enjoyed traveling out west with his family, buying and selling cars, and listening to music, especially the Beatles.

He is survived by his wife, Joni Gorman; children, Carrie (Isidro) Lopez, Niki Broderick, Graci (Joel Newman) Gorman, Dylan (Megan Firl) Gorman, Sophi (Rohit Hazra) Gorman, and Victoria Gorman; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Alexa, Easton, Isaac, Nicholas, Rylan, and Benjamin; one great grandson Grayson; siblings, Charles Gorman, Mary (Jim) Reinhardt, Ernie (Gayle) Gorman, Donna (Mike) Smith, Denise Gorman, and Richard Gorman; many nieces and nephews; father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and DiAnn Johnson; four brothers-in-law, Larry Johnson, Tim (Gina) Johnson, Mark (Lori) Johnson and Tim Webb.  He is preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Michael Gorman, Helen Webb, and Pat Gorman and two nephews, Brian and Michael Reinhardt.

Mass of Christian burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Goodhue with Father Thomas McCabe presiding.  Burial will take place at St. Columbkill Catholic Church Cemetery.  Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing and for one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday.  Memorials are preferred to the Parkinson's Foundation.  Online condolences can be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
