Wilfred "Bob" Holm, 89, of Red Wing, died Thursday, August 15, 2019, at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Lake City Care Center. He was born January 6, 1930, in Red Wing, to Lars Arthur and Margaret (Luhman) Holm and grew up in Goodhue. Following his father's death, he left school at age 14 and began working to help support his family. In 1952, he enlisted in the US Army and served in Suwon, Korea as a mechanic. After he was honorably discharged, he returned home and on September 4, 1954 married Janice Larson. They moved to Red Wing in 1959, raising their family in the home Bob resided in for 60 years. He and his brother, Willard, owned and operated Holm Bros. Construction Company (1953-2010). The business began with a single piece of road equipment and grew to build over 700 miles of roads in 13 counties within Minnesota, including the construction of Hwy 58 from Goodhue through Hay Creek, MN and the construction of Hwy 52 from Fountain, MN through Preston, MN.
While Bob loved building roads and being outdoors, he and Janice always enjoyed quality time with their family and being fans in the stands for their children's and grandchildren's sporting events over the years. He bowled for many years, enjoyed a good game of euchre or cribbage, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Bob was a member of United Lutheran Church, Red Wing Elks Lodge BPOE #845, Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54, Burnson Lillyblad VFW #1218, Red Wing Golf Course and the Local 49'ers Operating Engineers
He was preceded in death by wife Janice in 2007; sister, Mildred Deden, and brothers, Walter and Willard. He is survived by daughter, Jill Mehrkens and her son, Kyle (Flavia) Mehrkens; son, Jerry (Denise) and their sons Ryan (Michelle) and Kevin (Elyse); son, Thomas (Dr. Angela Medina) and their children, Amelia (Ben) Bibeau, Cullen, and Grace, and son, Jack(Lynn) and their children, Allie, Michaela (Jared) Bertsch, Chris (Abby), 7 great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Ruth Holm, and many nieces and nephews.
