William Huber

June 20, 1950 — September 30, 2025

William "Cubby" "Bill" Joseph Huber, 75, of Ellsworth, died Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at his home.

He was born June 20, 1950 in Red Wing, Minn. to Walter and Mary John (Shuel) Huber. He was the senior class president of the graduating class of 1968 at Ellsworth High School. He then went on to the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. After graduation he began a 30-year teaching career. He taught social studies at public schools in Medford, Elmwood, Glenwood City and Somerset, Wis. Cubby also coached football, wrestling and girls' softball during his teaching career. His wrestling team at Medford took 4th place at state. Under his coaching, the Elmwood softball team also made it to state in the very first girls' softball state tournament held in Wisconsin. Glenwood City's football team also took home a state title under his leadership.

In 2006, he opened Cubby's Pizza, Video, and Tanning, which he owned and operated until early 2020. He was also a seasonal truck driver for Ag Partners and a frequent substitute teacher at area schools.

Cubby was a dedicated Wisconsin sports fan. He was a season ticket holder for the Badgers and loved cheering on the Brewers and, of course, the Packers. He enjoyed traveling with his partner, Jennifer. Together, he and Jennifer traveled all over the world on numerous cruises. Cubby loved his children and grandchildren, and he was always excited to cheer on his grandkids at their various activities and sporting events. He was also a swimmer. Every morning he woke up early to swim and was proud to be a member of the 100 Mile Swim Club.

Cubby had a big heart. He was deeply empathetic and hated to see anyone hurt. He had a special knack for spotting the kids who needed a little extra attention or encouragement and making sure those kids got what they needed to succeed. He was so proud of his daughters. He instilled in them what he valued most: kindness. His motto was, "It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice."

He loved telling stories and his smile could light up a room. He took care of his relationships and had a life-long group of friends who he checked in with daily and who he treasured deeply.

Cubby will be missed by many, including his partner of 17 years, Jennifer Friestad of Ellsworth; daughters, Billie Jo Huppert and Bailee (John) Hoikka, both of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Carter, Lily, Brynlee, Blair, and John William; siblings, Mary Lee (Jerry Rovillard) Huber, John (Kim Smith) Huber and Ann (Jeff) Thuot; nieces and nephews, Leslie (Nick) Bauer, Betsy O'Keefe, Jake Huber, and Hank (Kristen) Huber; as well as 5 great nieces and nephews; other extended family, and many dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister-in-law, Karen Huber; and close uncle, Leroy Huber.
