Willmar H. Sommerfield age 73, of Mazeppa died suddenly on Saturday, March 10, 2112 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa with Rev. Alan Horn and Rev. William Ziebell officiating. Interment will be in Mazeppa Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Willmar Henry Sommerfield was born on February 4, 1939 on the family farm in Chester Township, Wabasha County, MN to Henry O. and Mathilda A. (nee Betcher) Sommerfield. He grew up in rural Mazeppa, attended Mazeppa Schools and graduated from Mazeppa High School in 1957. Willmar farmed and worked at Crenlo in Rochester. On April 8, 1961 he married Dianne M. Stevens in Mazeppa. The made their home near Potsdam and farmed until 1969. They moved to Mazeppa and Willmar worked for Meyer Industries and did carpentry work on the side. From 1976 - 1981 they lived in Great Falls, MT and Willmar worked as a carpenter. They returned to Mazeppa and Willmar was a self-employed carpenter until he retired. Willmar was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, drinking coffee with his friends and family at the counter, listening to old time music and spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter.
Willmar is survived by his wife, Dianne; sons, Kevin Sommerfield of South Pasadena, CA and Jeff "Petey" (Marla Kay) Sommerfield of Mazeppa; daughter, Wanda Voeltz of Mazeppa; grandchildren, Nicole Voeltz, Kelsey Voeltz, Kaitlyn Sommerfield and Alyssa Sommerfield; great granddaughter, Brooklyn Voeltz; brothers, Elmer (Patricia) Sommerfield of Rochester and Roger (Janice) Sommerfield of Zumbrota; sisters, Delores Shea of Hastings and Karen (Al) Long of Mazeppa; Sister-in-law, DeeAnn Sommerfield of Mazeppa. Willmar was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth Sommerfield.
