Darryl Robert "Hoss" Moyer

January 4, 1939 — June 22, 2019

Darryl (Hoss) Moyer, age 80, of Rochester, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital on Saturday, June 22, 2019. Hoss was diagnosed in 2013 with Lewy Body Dementia and had been cared for at home until recently. On April 26th, he moved to a nursing home, and on June 15th, he moved to St. Mary's Hospital under the wonderful care of Mayo Hospice.

Hoss was born in Pine Island on January 4, 1939, to Jesse Moyer and Helen (Elias) Moyer. He grew up in and around Pine Island and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1957. Immediately after graduation, Hoss enlisted in the U.S. Navy along with several of his high school buddies. He served from June 24, 1957 to June 23, 1963. While in the Navy, he met and married, Carol Elnora Howard. Together they had four children: Ken (Kelly) Moyer (grandchildren Katie, Erich, Nick, Mandy, and Ariana), Jeff Moyer (grandchildren Sam and Izaak), Lori (Pat) Caitlin (grandchildren Bill and Jon), and Robert Moyer (deceased) (grandchildren Nick and Ben), and many great-grandchildren. On September 23, 1978, Hoss married Judy Lynn Hudson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Together they had two children, Jesse (Courtnee) Moyer of Cincinnati, OH (grandchildren) (Cooper Edwards Moyer and Bentley Hudson Moyer), and Jennifer (Jesse) Laganiere of Rochester. Hoss is survived by several nieces and nephews who are all very dear to our family. He was predeceased by his parents, his son Robert, and his brother and sister-in-law Caryl and Sandy Moyer of Pine Island, MN.

Hoss held several positions through the years but ended his working career and retired from IBM. He was very active in VFW Post 1215 and held many elected positions there. In addition, he was proud to have served in the VFW Post 1215 Color Guard for over 50 years. He also loved watching the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. Because of their past records, we often heard him say if they were losing "they just can't stand prosperity". The family wishes to thank the Mayo Clinic palliative care team (especially Johanne Bates who is amazing), Mayo Hospice, and Hoss' longtime doctor, Dr. Robert Stroebel of the Mayo Clinic. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Monday, July 1, 2019, at 11:15 am at VFW Post 1215. Inurnment at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Preston, MN, is scheduled for 3:00 pm. Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
