Eugene “Murph” Berg, 90, of Red Wing, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Bay View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born February 6, 1933 in Albert Lea to George and Eleanor (Johnson) Berg. He grew up in New Richland and graduated from New Richland High School, class of 1951. In 1954, Murph enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1956. On October 27, 1957 he was united in marriage to Lois Erickson in Hartland, Minnesota and the couple was blessed with 3 daughters.
Murph worked for B. F. Goodrich Tire Co. where he was a district manager. In 1968 the family moved to Red Wing where he purchased Tripp Tire Shop. After he sold the business, he went on to work for Munson Trucking and then American Family Insurance, retiring in 1997.
Murph was an avid sports fan. He played fastpitch softball, golfed, and bowled for many years. He is a member of the Freeborn County Hall of Fame for Fastpitch. He also belonged to the Golden K Kiwanis and the Leo C. Peterson American Legion. He was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church where also served as an usher.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois; their 3 daughters, Susan (Bryan) Bolland, Sandra (Kim) Korsten, and Sheryl (Scott) Balster, all of Red Wing; 8 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews, other family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Connie Hall and Odean Berg, his parents, and his in-laws, Peter and Gladys Erickson.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, September 21, 2023 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Mike Zaske officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the church or the Golden K Kiwanis. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
