Frederick Dickson Mohn, 68, died suddenly, on Friday, November 26, 2021, after a morning spent in the woods, hunting with his friends.  He was born Sept. 17, 1953, in Wells Creek Township, to John and Joyce (Anderson) Mohn and graduated from Red Wing Central High School, class of 1972.  He attended the University of MN, where he studied animal science and agronomy, as well as Red Wing Technical School for farm equipment mechanics.  He began farming with Delmer Hinck and ran a farm on Grosse Point farm for several years until he returned to live at home to care for his father.  He worked as a mechanical engineer at DB Industries and most recently, in his “retirement” was farming with Alan Brinkman and Bruce Benrud.

On May 22, 2010, he married the love of his life, Cheryl (Westphal) Smith, and they spent the past 11 years together in a harmony that complimented each other perfectly.  Together, they loved entertaining at their home and he enjoyed meeting new friends and traveling with her.  Often a perfect night was just spent at their home, with their dog and a glass of wine, discussing and digesting their day.  He was an easy-going, steady man, a rock and great listener, who took things “one day at time”.  To Fred, the glass was never half full, but always over-flowing--he saw the best in life.  He was gentle-giant of a man and had a heart of gold.  He wouldn’t miss a morning breakfast with his friends and neighbors at the Whistle Stop, and if you were lucky, maybe you’d get to hear one of his “Fredisms” that he’d come up with and throw into your conversation.  He had an old soul, and if he could pick an era, he’d probably choose to live in the Frontier Era of the Wild West, but living in current day times, he settled for the next best--watching an old western movie or show to transport him back in time.

For years, he has dabbled in wine-making, and has taken care of his own vineyard, harvested the grapes and vinified the wine.  He also worked part-time at Falconer’s Vineyard.  In addition to his grapes, he enjoyed tending to his vegetable and flower gardens, a skill he inherited from his mother, who was a master gardener. Fred also found time for fishing and hunting, two pastimes he always enjoyed.

Fred was also involved with several organizations locally, including 4-H, FFA, the Goodhue Fair Board, Hay Creek Township Clerk, Goodhue Lions Club and was an usher at First Lutheran Church in Lake City.

He will be dearly missed by wife, Cheryl Mohn of Lake City; uncle and aunt, Ken & Edie Hoffman of Lake City; mother & father-in-law, Gene & Dorothy Westphal of Red Wing; sister-in-law, Lisa (Jim) Banks of Oronoco; nephews & nieces-in-law, Cam (Jennifer) Banks of St. Cloud and Matthew (Alexis) Banks of St. Cloud and Jesse and Carly Banks of Rochester; ex-sister-in law, Linda (Dave) Buysee of Frontenac and her daughters, Sarah, Julia, Laura and Elise; cousins, Wayne, Jerry, Doug (Karen), Bruce (Wendy), Torseth, Greg (Deb) Anderson; 2 estranged brothers and 2 other nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved dogs Max and Shadow.

A Celebration of Fred’s Life Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at First Lutheran Church in Lake City with Rev. Tim Ehling officiating.  Inurnment will be at the church columbarium.  Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing and for one hour prior to the service at the church.  A luncheon will follow the service at the Goodhue Lion’s Club in Goodhue served by “The Ladies Tea” of Red Wing.  If you are not vaccinated, a mask is asked to be worn to all events.  Memorials are preferred to The Goodhue Lion’s Club or First Lutheran Church of Lake City.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
