Janice "Jan" Larson Obituary

Janice “Jan” Louise Larson, 89, of Red Wing died Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at St. Crispin’s Living Community - the Villa in Red Wing, from complications of dementia. She was born on July 12, 1934, to Oswald M and Eunice L (Mehrkens) Hallquist.  Jan grew up in Hay Creek and Red Wing.  She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1952, having been named the girl all-star athlete.   Jan and her close friend, Winnie Holmquist, embarked on a big adventure after high school and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL for about a year.  They enjoyed the sun and new friends, and ultimately returned to Red Wing.  Jan married John Brunkhorst June 16, 1956. They later divorced.

Jan went on to become a successful realtor, earning recognition as a realtor for Century 21. She ultimately settled at Paul Lawrence Realty, where she enjoyed a long career.   Jan married Lawrence J (Larry, Lars) February 2, 1983, in Hawaii.  They thought they fooled everyone by eloping, but the kids knew something was up when Larry walked down the wrong concourse at the Minneapolis airport. They enjoyed more than 20 years together.  They loved to travel and spend time on their boat with family and friends. Jan served on the Red Wing Planning Commission and was active for many years with Faith in Action and at First Lutheran Church as a Eucharistic Minister and general volunteer.  She enjoyed woodworking and even built a shop for her projects in her garage.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; parents Oswald and Eunice and her sister Judith Hultquist.  She is survived by her brother James Hallquist (Sue) of Santa Fe, NM; children, Jill Ranft (Mark) of Nashville, TN and James Brunkhorst (Julie) of Red Wing; 4 grandchildren - Beth Ostrowski (Patrick) of Nashville, TN Katherine Baron (Jeffrey) of Nashville, TN, Demi Brunkhorst of Red Wing and Michael Brunkhorst (Kylie) of Goodhue, MN and 2 great grandchildren, Harper and Clara Ostrowski, along with many nieces and nephews.
