Karen Moses-Richardson Obituary

Karen Marie Moses-Richardson, 78, of Lake City, died Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Elysian Senior Living, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born November 1, 1945, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin to Allen and Marjorie (Westby) Sather and grew up on a dairy farm in Looney Valley, MN near Houston.  She attended country school and graduated from Houston High School.  She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Winona State University.  Karen was married to David Moses on March 18, 1967 at the Looney Valley Lutheran Church in Houston.  They lived in Lake City, where she was blessed to start her teaching career.  They moved to Corona, California, where they both taught for a short time and returned to Lake City, where she continued her 36 ½ year teaching career.  She enjoyed teaching kindergarten, and though she was strict with her students, she loved them all.

She and David had many adventures in life through teaching, church and family.  Together they were able to spend a year teaching at a Christian school in Lippo Karawaci Indonesia.  In 2007 they opened Moz’s Lakeside Coffee Emporium, and though it was more David’s passion, Karen loved seeing all people come in, tending to them, and visiting with them.  David passed away in 2010 and Karen later remarried Dennis Richardson in 2012. They enjoyed their companionship later in life, until his death in 2020.

Karen was an active member of First Lutheran Church since 1967, where she had supervised the Luther League, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Bible School, and served as the Sunday School music director for 30 years.  She also participated in 2 mission trips to Jamaica.  Locally, she was a part of the Lake City Joy Singers, Lake City Mrs. Jaycees, Lake City Hospital Auxiliary and had volunteered at the Lake City Nursing home. Karen was quirky and humorous while being a kind, loving and giving person to her students, church and family.

She is survived by her children, Duren (Heather) Moses of St. Pete, FL; Karin (Eric) Wollan of Winona; grandchildren, Jasquel Cantu, Wendy, Emily and Brayden Moses and Garit and Wesley Wollan; great-granddaughter, Verena; 2 brothers, Richard (Marlene) Sather of Houston and David (Cindy) Sather of Edmond, OK; sister, Jude (Bob) Ledebuhr of Rochester and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, David Moses and Dennis Richardson; niece, Wendi Vix and a great-niece, Kianna.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2023 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Miller officiating.  Visitation will be from 11 a.m. -1p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Lake City.  In lieu of flowers Karen wishes for you to bring a backpack filled with school supplies or just a simple donation of school supplies or a book.  Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson Peterson Chapel.
