May 16, 1940 — November 22, 2020

Red Wing

Lawrence “Larry” H. Peterson, 80, of Red Wing, died Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Red Wing. He was born May 16, 1940 in Red Wing to Carl and Esther (Lundell) Peterson. He graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1958. On February 25, 1961 he married Fay Feindt at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing.  For 7 years, he worked at the Goodhue County auditor’s office until 1970 when he joined the Red Wing Fire Department for the next five years. In 1975 he was appointed to Clerk of Court but he continued on as a volunteer firefighter. He retired as County Administrator in 2003.

His faith, family and friends were very important to Larry. He faithfully attended weekly bible studies and was an active member of First Lutheran Church. He was an avid Minnesota sports fan and could be found cheering on the Vikings, Timberwolves, Gophers and of course, the Wingers and Rochester Grizzlies. He loved watching his grandkids sporting events. He was a golfer and spent many hours each week out on the green with friends. But he most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially on trips to the North Shore and Wisconsin Dells where they took yearly family vacations. Larry spent his quiet time watching and feeding the backyard birds.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Fay; two daughters, Holly (Scott) Powers of Red Wing and Amy (Chris) Ratzloff of Rochester; grandchildren, Andrew and Nicholas Powers and Brandon and Ali Ratzloff; brother, Harlan (Peg) Peterson of Florida; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan Feindt and Phyllis Mathew; as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his sisters: Lois (Robert) Kind and Helen (Tom) Heesch; and his parents.

A memorial service will be held at a later date when it’s safe to gather together again. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
