Mary Terese Cyr, 58, of Red Wing, died Saturday, November 4, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 6, 1965, in Minneapolis, to Marvin and Ruth (Bohlin) Karppi. She grew up in Champlain, Minnesota and graduated from Anoka High School in 1984. She attended the College of St. Benedict, where she received a degree in social work and also met the love of her life, Edward Cyr. They were married on February 20, 1988 and they made their home in Red Wing and were blessed with five children. She worked at Rice County for a brief time, prior to starting her 30 year career as a social worker for Goodhue County. Mary took her job to heart—she was a caring professional who helped others to improve their lives. Her caring nature was also something evident in her relationships with her children, as she would do anything for them. She especially loved capturing their family moments in photos and putting them together in scrap books, a priceless treasure her family has amassed throughout the years. She loved taking trips with her husband and children, camping and visiting the different national parks together. She looked forward to her children’s events and activities, and now loved seeing her new grandson. Her children will remember her caring and comforting ways, her cuddles and her motherly reassurance in times of uncertainty.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Edward; 5 children, Ethan (Kyra) Cyr, Olivia (Adam) Fitzpatrick, Patrick, Molly and Teagan Cyr; grandson, Waylon Cyr and one grandchild on the way; her mother, Ruth Burns; brother, Daniel Karppi and mother-in-law, Mary Ann Cyr.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Karppi; father-in-law, Romeo Cyr; step-father, Gary Burns; sister-in-law, Georgianna Karppi; grandparents, Doris and Arnold Karppi and Harry and Mary Bohlin.
