Wayne Anthony Schafer

August 23, 1950 — September 10, 2020

Mazeppa

Wayne Anthony Schafer was born August 23, 1950, in Red Wing, MN to Howard and Edith (Majerus) Schafer. He was the 3rd of 7 children. His childhood was spent with many weekends  fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends. A tradition he kept up until he died.

Wayne passed away peacefully at home on September 10th, 2020 after a two year battle with cancer.

After Wayne graduated from Goodhue High School, he entered the US Army in February 1970 and switched to Reserves in 1972 and was honorably discharged in February 1976. He worked as a MP while active duty. He was an active member of the Bellechester American Legion Post 598.

Wayne spent the majority of his life working in Construction, working for various companies in SE MN and the Twin Cities area. After retirement, along with continuing his fishing adventures, he also tried his hand at winemaking from grapes grown in the garden and canning garden vegetables such as pickles, salsa, tomato sauce and veggie mix. As his wife and son were fans of hot spices, he attempted several times to make a mix too spicy for them. Many times nieces and nephews were gifted wine and canned veggies after a visit over the years.

Wayne married Wanda (Darcy) Schafer, August 3rd, 1974, in Bellechester, MN. Together they settled on a farm in rural Mazeppa where they raised their 3 children and watched their 4 grandchildren play and grow.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda; children, Robin (Henry) Keller, Carrie Schafer, and Andy (Carrie) Schafer, all of Mazeppa; four grandchildren, Noah and Maya Keller, Zailey and Deacon Schafer; siblings, Sandy (Gerry) Hauer, Cindy Little, Guy (Ted) Schafer, Jeff (Mark Destree) Schafer, Al Schafer and Howie (Julie) Schafer; and ten nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Bennett Schafer.

The family would like to give  special thanks to Mayo Clinic Hospice for the care and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
